Plastic Clothing Awareness

Posted by Eleanor Turner

Your health can be directly linked to the food you eat and to the clothes you wear. Did you know that today, 85% of clothing is made from plastic and synthetic fibers? The undergarments category is especially rife with plastic-blended fabrics that tout performance qualities, but they’re actually terrible for you and the environment.

"Synthetic-blended fabrics leach microplastics into our water supplies, our food chains, and then into our bodies."

Read it again: Synthetic-blended fabrics leach microplastics into our water supplies, our food chains, and then into our bodies. It is estimated that we ingest one credit card’s worth of plastic a week. Plastics, including plastic-blended fabrics, contain EDCs, or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals. These chemicals interfere with the way our bodies’ hormones work. They’ve been linked to adverse health outcomes including infertility, abnormalities in sex organs, endometriosis, early puberty, altered nervous system function, immune function, certain cancers, respiratory problems, metabolic issues, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, growth, neurological and learning disabilities, and more.

Plastics on a Beach

According to Environmental Health News, worldwide sperm counts in men have declined 50 percent in 50 years. Expert Epidemiologist, Shanna Swan estimates that by 2045 sperm counts are set to reach zero. Oh and if you hadn't heard: penis size is shrinking

"It is estimated that we ingest one credit card’s worth of plastic a week."

All the while, global production of plastics ramped from 50 million tons in the mid-70s to around 300 million tons today.

The Solution:

It is more important than ever to reduce our plastic use. It’s hard because plastic is nearly everywhere. I can’t help but see bottle caps, broken pieces of trash cans, potato chip bags, and many other microplastics while walking down my own street. Aside from raising your awareness, I’m presenting a solution in the undergarments category.

"The Big Favorite has removed all plastic and synthetic fibers from our fabrics."

The Big Favorite has removed all plastic and synthetic fibers from our fabrics. That means we’ve worked with different knit constructions to maintain stretch. Using 100% Pima Cotton paired with 1x1 Ribs, Interlocks, and Jerseys, we’re able to provide the right structure and stretch around your body depending on the needs for each piece, and without the need for recovery properties of synthetic fiber. People who have worn our undershirts and underwear are raving! They say, “it disappears on you.” Read all 38 of our 5-star reviews here

Not only is the removal of plastic fiber from our fabrics better for you, it’s better for the environment, and it’s better for recycling. So when you take part in our Circular Savings Program, we can mechanically recycle these goods back into new yarn and materials, keeping textiles out of landfills, and resources in use.
